Another Day, Another Stars’ Walk-off

The Dominican University softball team returned to the diamonds on Thursday after an off-day on Wednesday, picking up a 9-0 win over Regis College before walking off with a 3-2 win over Emmanuel College in the day's second game.  The walk-off win is the Stars' third walk-off in eight games, previously picking up wins in the bottom of the seventh over Mitchell College and Houghton College on the first two days of the Stars' spring trip.

Dominican, now 5-3 on the season, returns to action on Friday, taking on the Elizabethtown Blue Jays and Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen before closing out the team's trip to Clermont, Florida, with Gordon College and Roger Williams University on Saturday.

Game One: Dominican 9, Regis 0

The Stars staked starting pitcher Cat Klostermann to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, capitalizing on a pair of Regis errors in the first three hitters.  Allyson Dilday picked up the Stars' lone hit of the frame, an RBI single with the bases loaded, making it 3-0 before Amanda Urdiales walked with the bases loaded before the Pride could finally escape the top of the first.

The four runs were more than enough for Klostermann who pitched around two hits in four innings of shutout softball before turning the game over to Libby Zoppa for the final three outs.  In picking up the win, Klostermann improved to 2-2 on the season while lowering her earned run average to 4.30.

At the plate, the Stars rapped out 11 hits, three for Klostermann who was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk to help her own effort.  Dilday and Megan Hufnagle added two hits apiece while Gabby Curran and Urdiales logged Dominican's only two extra-base hits with a double apiece.

Game Two: Dominican 3, Emmanuel 2

With single runs in the top of the first and sixth innings, the Emmanuel College Saints led 2-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth before rallying for two runs to knot the score at 2-2.  Sydney Kuderna and Gordon sparked the rally with back-to-back one out singles before Julia Orozco walked to load the bases.  On as a pinch hitter, Klostermann hit a ground ball but the Saints, trying to get the out at the plate, committed the first of three errors over the final two innings, allowing Dominican back in the game.  One out later, Orozco scored on a wild pitch, setting the table for the seventh inning excitement.

Dilday pitched around a one-out single, aided when the runner left early trying to get herself into scoring position.

In the home half of the seventh, Curran reached on an error with one away.  Hufnagle then laid down a beautiful bunt for a hit and Curran was able to come all the way around to score from first when the throw sailed down the first baseline.

Dilday went the distance in the circle for the Stars, improving to 2-0.  The freshman was able to pitch around five hits and four walks over the seven innings with the help of six strikeouts.

At the plate, the Stars outhit the Saints, 7-5, with Gordon leading the way with two hits and a run scored.
