Game Recap: Softball |

Stars Take Two From Blue Angels

The Dominican University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader on Monday evening, topping the Mount Mary University Blue Angels in game one 7-3 before taking game two 10-2 in six innings.  With the wins, the Stars improve to 18-12 with ten games to play for the 2019 regular season.

Dominican will return to action on Thursday afternoon, traveling down Division Street to take on the Concordia University Chicago Cougars in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) twin bill.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Game One: Dominican 7, Mount Mary 3

After the Blue Angels took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, the Stars scored seven unanswered runs to top Mount Mary 7-3.  Cat Klostermann went the distance, surrendering just one earned run on four hits and two walks while punching out 11 to improve to 7-7 on the season in the circle for the Stars.

Dominican rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead after three innings.  Alena Valenzuela delivered the big hit for the Stars in the inning, smacking a ground rule double to the gap in right-center, scoring Sydney Kuderna and Megan Hufnagle to even the score, 3-3.  Valenzuela then scored the go-ahead run when Klostermann got caught in a run-down between first and second, allowing Valenzuela to swipe home.

Kuderna added to the Stars' lead in the bottom of the fourth, lacing a two-out, two-run single to left, scoring Gabby Curran and Bryana Ramos who both singled earlier in the inning.

Dominican then tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Katie Fredrick and Kenna Pierceall picked up back-to-back doubles with one away.

The Stars finished the game with ten hits, including three doubles.  After picking up six hits on Saturday, Hufnagle continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-4 in the win while raising her batting average to .364 for the season.

Game Two: Dominican 10, Mount Mary 2 (6 Inn.)

Kuderna went the distance in game two, improving to 4-2 on the season.  The senior left-hander surrendered just two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking none.

The Blue Angels took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third before the Stars rallied for four runs on two hits and three Mount Mary errors in the bottom of the inning and never looked back.  Dominican pounded out 11 hits in the win, two apiece for Curran, Alyssa Stuart and Maddie Sniegolski while Fredrick roped her second double of the day and fourth of the season.
