Game Recap: Baseball |

Stars Split With Warriors

The Dominican University baseball team suffered a 7-6 setback in game one before rallying for a 15-5 win in game two to split a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) twin bill with the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on Saturday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Freshman right-hander Bryant Bagshaw picked up the win in game two, improving to 7-0 on the season and tying the Dominican University single season record for wins.

"We gave a game away in the first game," said Steve Hardman, the Stars' head baseball coach in his eighth season. "We went up big early and took our foot off the gas.  They changed pitchers and we couldn't adjust.  We had some chances to add to our lead and did not take advantage. The lack of a killer instinct came back to bite us when they put up a big eighth inning.  In game two I was glad to see us go up early and they responded again, tied up the game but we answered and scored right away and then had a big ninth to put the game away. While the split is a bit disappointing with the way we gave game one away, it keeps us in line to be able to make the conference tournament."

The Stars now stand at 16-13 overall and 10-4 in the NACC with a matchup with the conference-leading Concordia University Chicago Cougars slated for Monday at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium. The first pitch of the NACC series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Game One: Wisconsin Lutheran 7, Dominican 6

Frankie Sessa collected two hits and drove in four runs over the first four innings as Dominican opened a 6-0 lead before the Warriors scored seven runs over the final three innings to steal game one, 7-6.

The Stars manufactured a run in the top of the first when Johnny Condron singled to left and took second on a wild pitch before Sessa singled to score Condron.

In the second, the Stars took advantage of a Warriors' error with the bases loaded and two outs, scoring four unearned runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Sessa.

Sessa then drove in his fourth run of the game in the top of the fourth with a sac fly to plate Ryan Simak who roped a double to right earlier in the frame.

Dominican's Hayden Young cruised through the first seven innings, entering the bottom of the eighth with a 6-2 lead.  After giving up a one-out single followed by a double, Young turned the game over to the bullpen.  After chasing the freshman right-hander, Wisconsin Lutheran rallied for five runs on four hits and one error, eventually taking the lead when Jake Constein bounced to second allowing Ryan Dominick to score from third.

Trailing for the first time in the game, Dominican put the tying run on base in the top of the ninth when Sessa was hit by a pitch with one out but Levi Schriefer stranded him at first, picking up his second save of the season.

The Stars managed nine hits in the loss, two apiece for Sessa and Condron.

On the mound, Young took no decision, working 7.1 innings.  The rookie was charged with four runs, three earned, on eight hits and one walk while striking out seven.  Austin Michals took the loss, surrendering the go-ahead run while working 0.2 innings.

Game Two: Dominican 15, Wisconsin Lutheran 5

Leading 7-5 heading to the ninth inning, the Stars rallied for eight runs in the top of the ninth to break the game open and earn Bagshaw his seventh win of the season.  The freshman right-hander had worked six innings, surrendering five runs, four earned, on eight hits and four walks while striking out four.

After the Warriors had rallied for four runs off Bagshaw in the bottom of the fifth, the Stars scored a run in the top of the sixth when Mike Buckley singled to left to plate Brandon Diedrich who had walked with two outs and stole second to get into scoring position for Buckley.  Bagshaw then worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth before turning the game over to the bullpen for three scoreless innings.

In Dominican's eight-run ninth, Condron led off the inning with a double, scoring on a Mike Piotrowski single, and later tripled as the Stars sent 12 hitters to the plate.

Sessa picked up two more hits in the nightcap and drove in four runs while Condron went 5-for-7 with two doubles, a triple, three runs batted in and four runs scored.

As a team, the Stars picked up a season-high 17 hits.
