Stars Sweep Eagles To Move Closer To NACC Tourney Bid

The Dominican University softball team opened the final week of the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of the Edgewood College Eagles on Tuesday night at the Ballpark at Rosemont. The pair of wins pushes the Stars to 21-17 and 10-10 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) with just one conference series remaining.

Dominican sits in seventh place in the NACC standings and would be in the six-team conference tournament as the sixth-seed if the regular season ended today.  The Stars can continue their push to tournament on Saturday, traveling to Alverno College to take on the Inferno. First pitch in that series is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Alverno Field.

Game One: Dominican 8, Edgewood 2

The Stars scored five times in the first two innings while Allyson Dilday improved to 9-5 in the circle, tossing 4.1 innings of three-hit softball.

Gabby Curran led of the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and the Stars had runners at the corners with nobody out after Megan Hufnagle singled to left.  Sydney Kuderna knocked in the game's first run when she singled through the left side and Hufnagle then crossed when Hannah Gordon bounced into a fielder's choice.

The Stars added three runs in the bottom of the second after Julia Orozco started the frame with a double down the right field line.  Cecilia Winters McCarthy pushed around Orozco when she followed with a single to right.  Curran followed with a double, putting runners at second and third.  One out later, Kuderna plated her second run of the game when she singled through the left side again.  Alena Valenzuela followed with an RBI single, staking Dilday to a 5-0 lead.

After setting the Eagles down in order in the third, Dilday turned the game over to Kuderna in the circle.  Edgewood got a run in the fourth and another in the sixth, cutting the lead to 5-2, before Dilday returned to get the final four outs to secure the win.

In total, the Stars scored eight runs on 12 hits.  Curran, Hufnagle and Kuderna all finished with two hits apiece for Dominican in the win.

Game Two: Dominican 7, Edgewood 1

Cat Klostermann went the distance in the circle for Dominican in game two, improving to 8-9 on the season after surrendering just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out six.  Klostermann completed the all-around effort with a spectacular catch in the field and going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs batted in.

Dominican broke open a 2-0 game in the bottom of the fourth, putting up four runs on three hits and three Edgewood errors.  Klostermann helped her own cause with a run-scoring single.  The Stars then scored two runs when Orozco laid down a sacrifice bunt that the Eagles threw into right field.  The fourth run of the inning then scored when Curran reached on an error, allowing Winters McCarthy to cross after the Stars' second baseman singled earlier in the inning and advanced on a wild pitch.
