The Dominican University men's tennis team swept through the Concordia University Chicago Cougars on Friday afternoon, 9-0, to put the finishing touches on the 2018-2019 River Forest Rivalry Cup sponsored by Northwestern Mutual. The win secured the Rivalry Cup for Dominican for the second consecutive academic year and second time in the three-year history of the Rivalry series.
"This was a big win for us and the athletic department," exclaimed Troy Tonsil, the Stars' head men's tennis coach. "Being able to earn a spot in the conference tournament next week while beating our neighborhood rival and retaining the River Forest Rivalry Cup for the university is a great feeling—a truly special moment."
"We set the tone early with the doubles matches and carried it through singles play. I was most impressed with
Antonio Morales and
Joshua Sapnu, battling through adversity to earn wins in their respective singles flights. It was a really good effort all around from those two."
Dominican's number one and two doubles teams of
Alexander Tobias and Morales and
Brandon Pineda and Sapnu both claimed 8-4 wins over their respective CUC foes. Tobias and Pineda then rolled at numbers one and three singles respectively while Morales topped the Cougars' Peter Rios, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 at number two singles while Sapnu knocked off Trey Dille, 3-6, 6-2, 13-11, at four singles.
With the win, the Stars improve to 6-8 on the season and 4-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). Dominican has a beat on the sixth seed in the upcoming NACC Tournament and would meet the tournament's number three-seed in the quarterfinals on Monday, April 29. The Stars will find out their exact fate when conference regular season play wraps up this weekend.
