The Dominican University men's soccer team scored a 1-0 win over the Illinois College Blueboys to open the 2019 season on Friday afternoon in Jacksonville, Illinois. The Stars dominated possession and outshot the host Blueboys 24-6 but needed extra time before
Jonathan Hernandez could knock in the game-winner in the 98
th minute of play.
"Illinois College had a good game plan today," said
Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach when asked about the contest. "They sat in deep and played for the counter. We had some nice strings of possession but really struggled to finish in the final third. We probably had double-digit quality chances but only came away with the one goal. Fortunately that is all it took."
The Stars had 18 shots through regular time and peppered the Illinois College goal with six more shots in the overtime, putting eight on frame throughout the match. It was the final shot on goal that was finally able to beat the Blueboys' Rual Rubalcava.
In the 98
th minute,
Isaac Perez received a ball along the sideline, making a cut to beat one defender before whipping a cross into the box where Hernandez was able to get on the end of it and redirect the ball past Rubalcava for the golden goal.
Playing the full 98 minutes in goal, Dominican's
Daniel Dominguez faced six shots, three on frame, making three saves to pick up the shutout victory. For Dominguez, a sophomore, the shutout was the seventh of his career.
Dominican, now 1-0-0 on the season, returns to River Forest for its home opener on Wednesday, September 4
th when the Stars are set to host the Elmhurst College Bluejays. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Dominican's West Campus Field.
