The Dominican University women's volleyball team opened the Marilyn Scribner Invitational on Friday night with a three-set sweep (25-20, 28-26, 25-9) of the Lake Forest College Foresters. The win pushes the Stars to 6-2 on the season with a pair of matches on deck for Saturday, taking on Buena Vista College at noon before closing the Invitational with the host Wheaton College Thunder at 2:00 p.m.
"Lake Forest was a good team," commented
Peter Maniscalco, the Stars' assistant women's volleyball coach. "We came out strong in the first set but they were able to test us and close the gap towards the end of the set. We needed to be a little more disciplined on our side of the net as we gave them some momentum going into the second set. In the second set, we showed poise, falling behind six points—but never really felt like we were out of reach. We showed a lot of maturity as Lake Forest started to play faster in the second set but we didn't try to match their speed, opting to play our game instead. In the third set, we clicked in nearly every facet of the game. Our defensive efforts allowed us to get some second-chance opportunities. A very good team win."
The Stars hit .277 in the winning effort while limiting the Foresters to an .081 attack percentage that included a -.071 in the third set. Dominican was also aggressive at the serving line, collecting 12 aces, five for setter
Anastasia Labadessa and three for
Madeline Morrow.
Keely McCallum paced the attack with ten kills on just 13 swings, hitting .692 for the match.
Gabija Sinickaite added eight kills of her won while
Olivia Magnussen and
Summer Smith finished with seven and five kills respectively.
Labadessa totaled 25 assists while
Natalie Jones finished with ten.
Defensively, Dominican's block, led by McCallum's two block assists, finished the night with six total blocks while the back row collected 40 digs. Sophomore
Sarah Lychock led the back row effort with a match-high 15 digs.
