The Dominican University women's volleyball made their home debut on Saturday evening, sweeping the Monmouth College Fighting Scots (25-14, 25-21, 25-18) at the Igini Sports Forum to improve to 10-2 on the year. The Stars hit .310 in the winning effort, including a .341 hitting percentage in the clinching set, committing just eight errors all night on 113 swings.
"I'm glad we were able to find more consistency tonight than we had on Wednesday in our conference opener," commented
Cameron Andrew, the Stars' second-year head coach. "We focused a lot on maintaining intensity and composure when we are ahead—something we struggled with at CUC—and we did a much better job of that tonight. We also were hammering home—in practice—staying calm and controlled when the game gets hectic and I thought we did a fantastic job of that tonight. It's always great to see the team implement what you are focusing on in practice."
Summer Smith paced the Stars' attack, knocking down 14 kills on just 23 swings. Sophomore
Gabija Sinickaite added ten kills on 20 attacks without committing an error while freshman
Keely McCallum knocked down eight kills on the night.
Anastasia Labadessa and
Natalie Jones ran the offense, dishing out 25 and 12 assists respectively.
At the serving line,
Gillian Jones set the tone for the Stars' aggressive serves, racking up six aces.
Defensively, the Stars limited the Fighting Scots to a .156 attack percentage, posting four total blocks and collecting 52 digs while allowing just 28 attacks to find the court. Libero
Sarah Lychock collected a match-high 19 digs while
Olivia Magnussen was involved in three of Dominican's four blocks.
The Stars return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Tuesday, traveling to Lisle, Illinois, to square off against the Benedictine University Eagles. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
