The Dominican University men's volleyball team had its second impressive showing to open the 2020 season, dominating the Lakeland University Muskies, 25-15, 25-11, 25-21, to improve to 2-0 on the season and in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). The Stars hit a hefty .438 on the night, committing just six errors on 80 swings while collecting 41 kills.
"I'm really proud of how our team played tonight," said
Cameron Andrew, the Stars' head men's volleyball coach. "We've been putting a huge focus on the defensive side of the game. We know our offense can get the job done, but we haven't shown that all the time on the defensive end. Tonight, though, we played some awesome defense, both at the net and in the more traditional sense in the back row. To out-dig and out-block a team like we did tonight, that is a huge step forward for us. Now we need to show we can repeat this effort on a daily basis."
The Stars demonstrated great balance in their attack with
Jack McGuire, 40 assists, utilizing his plethora of weapons, including
George Kougan and
Ethan Klosak who knocked down nine kills apiece while
Jake Sidner managed six kills on just eight swings over two sets.
Adrian Cebula and Matt Molloy added five kills each while
Troy Kates terminated four rallies on just five total attacks.
Defensively, Dominican managed six total blocks at the net. Molloy was in on a team-best four of them with four block assists. Klosak, McGuire and
Patrick Bradford also added multiple blocks with two block assists each. In the back row,
Bregin DeMarco collected a team-high ten digs as the Stars posted 41 blocks while allowing just 22 kills and forcing 21 errors for the Muskies' offense.
Dominican will now open its home slate on Friday, hosting the Fontbonne University Griffins for a 7:00 p.m. match at the Igini Sports Forum. Dominican will then host Olivet next Saturday before their first top-15 test when the #5 Carthage College Red Men visit the Igini Sports Forum on Wednesday, February 12.
