The Dominican University men's basketball snapped a seven-game losing streak on Wednesday night, picking up a 77-60 win over the Marian University Sabres on the road in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The win pushes the Stars to 9-13 on the season and 5-12 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) with three games to play. The Stars return to action on Saturday, traveling down Division Street for a River Forest Rivalry matchup with the Concordia University Chicago Cougars. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
"I'm really proud of this team," said
Mark White, the Stars' head men's basketball coach following the win. "They stayed together through a really difficult stretch. We are definitely excited for Saturday."
The Stars shook off a slow start, enduring a near four-minute scoreless drought to open the game, and trailed by as many as seven in the first half before using a 14-4 run over the final 4:30 of the first half to take a 39-35 lead at the break.
Jackson Smith scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the opening half while Dominican finished shooting 12-for-24 from the field over the opening 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, Dominican used a 14-0 run that spanned just under six minute, turning a 61-49 lead into a 26-point, 75-49 lead with 4:38 to play, effectively putting the game out of reach.
KJ Redfield and
Nick Lavere scored 16 points apiece off the Dominican bench while
Dylan Anderson rounded out four in double-figures scoring for the Stars with ten points, eight coming in the second half.
As a team, Dominican shot 25-for-44 from the field and converted on 18 of 23 attempts from the foul line. The Stars forced 20 Marian turnovers, leading to 20 points off of turnovers for Dominican.
For the Sabres, Matt Hickey led the way with 11 points in 20 minutes off the bench. Hickey was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field while the rest of the Sabres' lineup went 19-for-52.
