The Dominican University women's basketball team outscored the visiting Marian University Sabres 21-4 in the first quarter before coasting to a 70-57 win at the Igini Sports Forum in the Stars' regular season finale. With the win, the Stars improve to 18-7 on the season and 14-6 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), assured of finishing as the fourth or fifth-seed for the upcoming NACC Tournament, pending the outcome of Saturday's Benedictine at Concordia Wisconsin matchup.
"It was nice to send the seniors off with a win in their regular season and home finales," said
Amanda Parker, the Stars' second-year head coach. "It has been a long regular season and we are tired and a little banged up so it was good to see us jump them from the opening tip and then make that early lead stand up in the end. We need a few days of rest and recovery and then will get back to preparing for the conference tournament to continue to reach our goals."
Stephenee Huggans and
Alisha Markley combined for 29 points off the Stars' bench on 9-for-18 shooting from the field, including 7-for-11 from three. Huggans dropped in a game-high 17 in 25 minutes while Markley went for 12 points in 17 minutes.
Amari Stafford added 14 on 5-for-9 shooting, connecting on four of her eight attempts from three.
The Stars shot just over 38-percent from the field (26-68) but limited the Sabres to just 34-percent shooting (22-63).
Paris Harris led the way for Marian, scoring 15 points while Claire Levendoski and Whittney Jackson chipped in ten points apiece in the losing effort.
Dominican will play in the 2020 NACC Tournament quarterfinals next Wednesday, taking on the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons. The game will be played at Dominican with a Falcons' loss on Saturday while Concordia Wisconsin can secure the home game with a win on Saturday at Benedictine.
