Stars Take Series Finale From Tigers

The Dominican University baseball team avoided a series sweep, scoring an 8-4 win over the host Sewanee Tigers on Sunday afternoon on getaway day from Sewanee, Tennessee.  Freshman Jeremey Davidson picked up the win in his first collegiate outing while sophomore Trevor Fulmer tossed the final three innings, picking up the save.

"While we did not do a lot of things right today," said Steve Hardman, the Stars' head baseball coach following the win, "I'm proud of the way we battled. We went down early but did not fold. Our pitching struggled early and then really found their groove late. While we continued to struggle offensively, we took advantage of their mistakes and freebies to scratch across some runs. We found out a lot about us in this series. We have a lot of work to do before next week."

After the Tigers got to Davidson for three runs on five hits over the first three innings, including a leadoff homer to start the bottom of the third, the freshman settled in and gave up just one run on four hits over the next three innings to last six innings and leave in line to pick up the win. Trevor Fulmer then made his first appearance of the season, tossing three scoreless innings while working around three hits to pick up his first save of the season.

In the top of the fourth, the Dominican offense rallied for six runs, opening a 6-3 lead, on three hits and two errors.  Frankie Sessa started the frame with a double to left-center.  After a walk, Brandon Diedrich plated Sessa with a double to the gap in right.  An out later, the Stars loaded the bases when Nick Roeper was hit by a pitch.  A bases loaded walk then scored the second run of the inning. Diedrich then scored on a fielder's choice. The Tigers then committed errors on the next two plays with the Stars managing three more runs.

After the Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, the Stars rounded out the day's scoring with sacrifice flies in the sixth and ninth innings.

The Tigers outhit the Stars, 12-6, but Dominican's pitchers issued just one free pass all game while the Stars' hitters worked five walks and were hit by four pitches.  Sessa went 2-for-5 to lead the offense with Dominican's first through five hitters going 6-for-19 with a pair of doubles.

The Stars open another three-game set on Saturday, February 29, heading to Carlinville, Illinois, for a weekend series with the Blackburn College Beavers.  Saturday's single game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
