Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Stars Take Down Duhawks

The Dominican University men's volleyball team ran its winning streak to 11 matches with a four-set (25-13, 27-29, 25-17, 25-22) win over the Loras College Duhawks on Saturday afternoon at the Igini Sports Forum.  The Stars, now 11-0 on the year, return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Tuesday with the Aurora University Spartans coming to visit the Stars in River Forest for a 7:00 p.m. match.

"Proud of our team's ability to battle today," commented Cameron Andrew, the Stars' head coach, following the win. "Loras gave us a really good fight and made our guys work for this win. We've done a really good job of staying composed in tight moments but we struggled with that a little bit today. I think we needed a match like today to remind us of what it felt like to have someone push us back. I'm disappointed we dropped the second set, but you have to give credit to Loras for their refusal to give in down 24-19."

The Stars were in control most of the match, including the second set when Loras managed to fend off set point nine times before scoring the final three points of the set.

Dominican hit .282 in the win, hitting better than .270 in each the first, third and fourth sets, while struggling late in the second to post a .191 attack percentage.  Running the offense, Jack McGuire dished out 49 assists as the Stars managed 61 kills for the match.  Ethan Klosak led the way with 15 kills to five errors on 32 swings.  Sophomore George Kougan joined Klosak in double-figures with 11 kills while Troy Kates finished with nine kills on 14 attempts over three sets.

Defensively, Bregin DeMarco led the back row effort with a match-high 20 digs as the Stars allowed just 38 attacks to find the court.  At the net, the Dominican block was stellar, posting 11 total blocks to the Duhawks' four.  Kates logged six block assists while Kougan got in on five blocks.  McGuire, Jake Sidner and Mat Molloy all finished with three block assists apiece.

"We got to rest and recoup and get ready for a huge conference match on Tuesday," continued Andrew. "I think the guys know how important this one is for us, and we know Aurora has a target on us."
