The Dominican University men's volleyball team picked up its fourth consecutive win to open the 2020 season, topping the Olivet College Comets in three sets (25-7, 25-15, 25-17) on Saturday afternoon at the Igini Sports Forum. Dominican, now 4-0, faces its stiffest competition yet on Wednesday, when the eighth-ranked Carthage College Red Men visit River Forest for a 7:00 p.m. match.
On Saturday, the Stars hit a whopping .528 with 34 kills to just six errors on 53 total attacks. Defensively, Dominican forced the Comets into 19 attack errors while allowing just 19 kills. The Stars posted eight blocks at the net and picked up 19 digs in the back row.
"That was a great team win," commented
Cameron Andrew, the Stars' head coach, following the 58-minute match. "Everyone was able to contribute. All 18 players had a role in our success today. After Friday, we talked about how we needed to improve our service game and we took a step in the right direction today. Now we need to prep for Wednesday, get some rest and get ready for a big matchup with Carthage."
Twelve different Stars tallied at least one kill, paced by
George Kougan who finished with ten kills on 15 swings with just one miscue. Playing the final two sets,
Adrian Cebula added seven kills while
Troy Kates was a perfect 4-for-4 with four kills on four attempts.
Jack McGuire and
Evan Ruffner ran the offense with McGuire collecting 12 assists in the first two sets before Ruffner came on to pick up nine assists in the third set.
Defensively, Kougan added four block assists and a solo block for five total blocks while
Mat Molloy finished with three block assists in just one set of action. Cebula, Kates, Ruffner and
Patrick Bradford all finished the afternoon with two block assists each.
