Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Smith Reaches 1,000 Point Mark in Defeat to Rockford

River Forest, IL – In a game that was similar to Friday's, the Dominican University men's basketball team erased a 14-point halftime deficit but were unable to close out the game, falling to Rockford 84-78.

Senior Jackson Smith hit the 30-point mark for the second straight night, 32 points, and in doing so eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for his career (1,015).

A KJ Redfield jumper cut the deficit to 21-17 at the 11:31 mark of the opening stanza but Rockford responded with a 15-0 run over six minutes to pull away from the Stars , 36-17. The Regents would hold the advantage for the rest of the session and headed to the break up 46-32.

Trailing 50-38 two minutes into the second half, the Stars used an 18-5 run, capped off by a Dylan Anderson triple, to take their first lead of the game since 7-6 at 56-55 with 13:07 remaining in the game.

What changed the game from that point on was the foul situation as both teams were in the bonus just over halfway through the second half. Rockford was the team to fully capitalize on this as it quickly pushed a six-point lead, 63-57, to ten in less than two minutes as it made 6-of-6 free throws attempts during that stretch.

With the score 69-59 in favor of the Regents, the Stars began to chip away at the deficit with three-pointers from Anderson and Luke McDermott which made it a three-point game, 71-68, with just under five minutes to go.

Smith tied the score at 73-73 on his fifth triple of the night at the 2:35 mark but four straight buckets in the paint by Rockford extended the advantage back to six, 81-75, with 40 seconds remaining as it held off Dominican's comeback attempt, winning 84-78.

The Stars shot an impressive 40.5% (17-of-42) from three-point land, but Rockford dominated the paint 42-10 while making 73.5% (25-of-34) of its free throws.

Although it was a tough loss for the royal blue and white, Head Coach Mark White was pleased with his team's effort. "I thought we showed a lot of heart coming back from a 19-point deficit. This group works so hard and we will get to the point where we can sustain that effort throughout a 40-minute game."

Dominican will have the chance to do just that on Wednesday, February 24th when it heads to Aurora for a 7:30 p.m. game.
