Stars Win to Sweep Series with Regents

Rockford, IL – The Dominican University women's basketball team led by three at the half before once again using a strong second half to beat Rockford 74-67 on Saturday night.

Stephenee Huggans led the Stars with 17 points (6-of-11) while Mackenzie Coleman and Kamryn Woods hit the boards for 13 and 11 rebounds respectively.

A Coleman layup halfway through the opening quarter gave the Stars a 9-2 advantage but the Regents responded with a 12-5 run to knot the score at 14-14 with 2:14 left in the session. A pair of Huggans free throws with 19 seconds remaining gave the visitors an 18-17 lead heading to the second.

Trailing 25-23 midway through the second, Dominican used a 7-2 spurt to retake the lead, 31-25, but once again Rockford responded to close the half trailing by just three at 33-30.

Dominican extended its margin to 16 in the third quarter, 50-34, after a pair of Alisha Markley triples as a 20-point third quarter by the Stars gave them a 53-41 edge heading to the fourth.

The Regents did not go quietly though as they started the final 10 minutes of play with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to five, 53-48 but the Stars answered with threes from Hannah Currant and Woods to push the lead back out to nine, 61-52.

A Zaria Daniels layup stretched the differential back to double-digits, 66-54, at the 4:44 mark of the session but a 9-0 spurt by Rockford kept the game up for grabs, 66-63, with just over two minutes remaining. Huggans took charge on the next possession with a clutch layup to halt the run which was quickly followed by Woods' third triple of the night that iced the game for the Stars on its way to a 74-67 win.

The teams had nearly identical numbers in field goal percentage, rebounds, and turnovers but Dominican won the three-point battle by hitting 40% (8-of-20) of their attempts compared to Rockford's 25.9% (7-of-27).

"I'm happy we were able to pull away with a win," said Head Coach Antonio Rivas. "Offensively we are starting to figure out things and become a well-rounded attack. Defensively, we have yet to come together and play a complete game as we tend to be lackadaisical which leads to miscues. Anytime you get a win it's a good feeling but we need to fix that side of the ball if we truly are going to be a balanced team."

The Stars will look to do just that on Tuesday, February 23rd when they head to Lake Forest for a non-conference contest before their long-awaited home opener next weekend versus Concordia Chicago on Friday and Saturday.
