Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars Claw Past Stars in Closing Minutes

River Forest, IL – The Dominican University men's basketball team held a slim two-point lead at the half but a big second session by the Cougars helped them drop the Stars 70-59 on Friday night.

Jackson Smith scored a game-high 28 points while grabbing 13 rebounds for the double-double. KJ Redfield recorded a season-high 15 points, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.

A Redfield triple-capped an 8-0 run that gave Dominican a 16-7 lead nearly six minutes into the contest but Concordia Chicago remained unfazed as a 23-10 counter-knotted the game up at 26-26 with 3:13 left until the half.

Points from Smith and Redfield pushed the Stars ahead by four, 30-26 before the Cougars finished the half with a pair of free throws to trail by only two at the break.

A fast-break layup by Gavin Richardson held the margin at three, 42-39, at the 13:14 mark of the second session but Concordia Chicago responded with a pair of three-pointers to take a 51-47 lead with under eight minutes left in regulation.

The Stars would never tie the game back as a Dylan Anderson layup cut the deficit to two, 56-54, with 2:51 to go before the Cougars closed the game on a 14-5 run for the 70-59 win.

Both teams shot under 40% from the floor but the Cougars held a slight advantage from beyond the arc, hitting 33.3%(7-of-21) of their attempts, to come out on top.

"I thought the team really played hard," said Head Coach Mark White. "We were in a position to win the game but bad turnovers and defensive breakdowns cost us down the stretch."

Dominican will look to clean up those miscues in the rematch against Concordia Chicago on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
