Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Third Quarter Struggles Doom Dominican

River Forest, IL – The Dominican University women's basketball team trailed by five points at halftime but third-quarter shooting woes were too much to overcome as they fell 67-58 to Concordia University Chicago on Saturday night.

Hannah Currant had a season-high 21 points, going 11-of-12 from the free-throw line to lead the Stars offensively. The only other Dominican player in double figures was Dasia Norris with 12 as she nearly missed out on a double-double with nine boards.

Dominican trailed by a handful for most of the opening quarter as an Alisha Markley three-pointer cut the deficit to three, 14-11, with 2:34 remaining. Currant capitalized off of a Cougars' turnover to tie the game at 14-14 a minute later with the Stars ending the session on an 11-2 run to hold a 19-16 advantage heading to the second quarter.

Concordia Chicago opened the second session strong as it countered with a 10-2 spurt to retake the lead, 26-21, at the 6:30 mark. A fast-break layup by Kamryn Woods pushed the Stars back ahead 27-26 but the Cougars closed the half strong, carrying a 35-29 advantage at halftime.

A make from beyond the arc by the Cougars stretched the margin to double digits, 43-33, 3:30 into the third quarter as the Stars went 2-of-11 from the field in the period to trail 52-37 going into the fourth.

Concordia Chicago's led extended to as much as 19 points early in the final quarter and held at 15, 61-46, at the 3:25 mark. Dominican made one last-ditch effort with a Stephenee Huggans step back jumper cutting the margin to single digits, 63-54, with just two minutes left to go but the defense was unable to get any stops as the Cougars secured a 67-58 road win.

"Today's game was evident that you need four consistent quarters to allow yourself to win," said Head Coach Antonio Rivas. "We had flashes of great moments but we failed to provide the consistency we needed to win this game."

To coach Rivas' point, the Stars scored 19 and 21 points in the first and fourth quarter respectively but managed a combined 18 in the other two.

"We will take the next few days to prepare for the conference tournament and show we are a much better team than we showed today," added Coach Rivas.

Dominican now waits for the results of Monday night's game between Aurora and Benedictine to see who it travels too as the #3 seed on Thursday, March 4th in the first round of the NACC Tournament.
