River Forest, IL – The Dominican University women's volleyball team hosted Rockford University on Sunday evening for a NACC doubleheader, winning match one 25-17, 25-9. 25-11 before taking match two 25-18, 25-13, 25-15.
Madi Palmer set up
Ola Magiera for a kill to give the Stars a 10-6 lead in the opening set. Rockford trimmed the deficit to one at 14-13 but
Anastasia Labadessa capped off a mini 4-0 spurt with a service ace to open up some breathing room at 18-14.
Gillian Jones extended the margin to six, 20-14, with a service ace of her own as Dominican won five of the last eight points to take set one 25-17.
A
Madeline Morrow service ace helped the Stars jump out to a 7-2 lead in the second set and force a Regents timeout. Three straight kills by
Gillian Jones pushed the margin to 14-5 before
Emily Schellhase made it 21-8. A pair of Rockford attack errors would end the set 25-9 in Dominican's favor.
A Palmer kill gave Dominican a 9-3 advantage early in the third set before the Stars went on a 13-3 run to blow open the set at 22-6. Labadessa would add a service ace to make it 24-8 as the Stars won the third set 25-11 and the match three sets to none.
Jones led the offensive attack with 12 kills, hitting it at a .455 clip. Labadessa and Palmer split the setting duties, recording 18 and 15 assists respectively.
Leah Robinson had a strong match from the defensive specialist position, registering 10 digs.
Back-to-back kills by
Keely McCallum put the Stars ahead 9-5 in the first set of match two. Schellhase nudged the lead to five, 17-12, off of an assist by
Natalie Jones before Morrow found McCallum for another kill as Dominican narrowed in on closing off the first set at 24-16.
Haley Notzen would do just that as her kill, again from Morrow, capped off the first set 25-18.
Natalie Jones found Magiera for a kill to make in 9-3 Dominican in the early stages of the second set. Another kill by Magiera ballooned the lead to double-digits, 14-4, but a pair of errors halted the Stars' momentum at 15-7.
Gillian Jones got Dominican back on track with consecutive kills before Schellhase made it a 24-10 advantage after an assist from
Natalie Jones. Jones would be rewarded for her efforts as the setter, closing off the set with a kill of her own on a setup from Robinson.
Notzen tied the set at 5-5 in the early going before back-to-back service aces by
Hannah Hugunin were followed by a pair of attack errors from Rockford which forced the visitors to take a timeout trailing 12-7. A
Sofia Susa service ace pushed the margin to seven, 15-8, before she found Magiera to stretch the lead to double-digits at 20-10. Morrow joined in on the party from the service line to make it 24-10 before a Regents service error awarded the Stars the third set 25-15 and match two 3-0.
The freshman Schellhase paced Dominican with 10 kills in the match, swinging it at a .667 clip.
Natalie Jones and Morrow shared the setter duties with 15 and 11 assists respectively while
Gillian Jones anchored the defense with 11 digs.
"I'm really proud of this whole team," said Head Coach
Cameron Andrew. "It's always great to go 4-0 on a weekend, but to do so without dropping a set is an impressive feat. We had contributions from everyone on the roster as our depth was really on display this weekend."
Dominican will hit the road on Thursday, March 18th for another non-conference NACC matchup against Aurora at 7:00 p.m.
