Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

#5 Stars Fly Past Eagles

River Forest, IL – The #5 Dominican University men's volleyball team hosted the Edgewood College Eagles taking the match in three sets (21-10, 25-13, 25-11) on an efficient hitting night from the Stars.

A George Kougan kill and three consecutive service aces by Mat Molloy would start the scoring for the Stars as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set. Jack McGuire found Troy Kates to extend the Stars lead to 12-3 before a kill from Kougan would make it 14-9. McGuire set up Trey Cowan for a kill that would end the set 25-10.

In the second set, Dominican jumped to an early 3-0 after a service error from the Eagles and two service aces by Molloy. A solo block by Molloy would make it 17-7 before a kill by Cal Iwinski continued the Stars' momentum extending their lead to 22-10. McGuire found Lucas Eggers to finish the set 25-13.

A kill by the Eagles to start set three gave them their only lead of the match, 1-0. A block assist by McGuire and Kates before a service ace by Kougan would allow the Stars to regain the lead at 5-2. A Kougan kill started a 6-0 run for the Stars, ending with a service ace by Danny Pacini that extended the Stars lead to 14-6. The Stars closed out the set with a service ace by McGuire to give them the 25-11 win and take the match three sets to none.

"I thought we did a great job tonight, especially in that first set," said Assistant Coach Doug Burchett. "We controlled the tempo and speed of the match."

Offensively, the Stars hitting was efficient as they hit just under .500 at .473 and had 11 service aces as a team. Kates got it done on both sides of the net as he led the Stars with nine kills and three blocks in the match. Cowan and Kougan each had six kills while McGuire had 24 assists. Molloy had five service aces while adding three blocks on the defensive end. Bregin DeMarco led the Stars with seven digs.

"We sided out efficiently each set and did a great job at the service line to get them out of their system," continued Coach Burchett. "We played some solid defense behind the block to turn digs into transition offense."

The Stars return to action when they host MSOE Tuesday, March 30th inside the Igini Sports Forum with a start time of 7:00 p.m.
