#5 Stars Sweep Eagles, Claim NACC Title

Lisle, IL – The #5 Dominican University men's volleyball team claimed the 2021 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament by rolling the #6 Benedictine Eagles 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-19)

The Stars avenged their only loss of the season to the Eagles with the win.

A Jack McGuire kill off a feed from Bregin DeMarco made it 15-11 in the opening set before a Mat Molloy finish from McGuire, narrowed in on the first set win at 20-14. An Eagles attack error held the differential at seven, 24-17, before Troy Kates closed out the set 25-17.

A Trey Cowan service ace knotted the score at 9-9 but Benedictine held a two-point advantage at 15-13 before George Kougan tied the match at 17-17. McGuire found Cowan to take a 22-20 lead but the Eagles again retied the score at 24-24. Benedictine would falter in the key moments however as a service error and attack error gave Dominican a 26-24 second set win.

A kill by Kougan off a set from McGuire gave the Stars an 11-4 advantage in the third but the Eagles stormed back to make it a one-point affair at 13-12. An Adrian Cebula kill halted the momentum which was followed by another McGuire kill to give Dominican a 15-12 edge. Kougan doubled the margin to six, 21-15, before he closed out the set and match with another kill.

"I'm so proud of this group of guys," said Head Coach Cameron Andrew. "What an amazing season they've had and they fully deserve this conference championship."

Kougan paced the offense with 13 kills while McGuire orchestrated the attack with 30 assists.

"These guys have pushed through so much adversity and tonight they really showed how composed and strong they are," continued Coach Andrew.

The Stars will find out their matchup for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, held in Salem, Virginia, April 21st-24th this Monday at 9:00 a.m.

"We now have to shift that focus over to getting prepped for the NCAAs and I know the guys are up for this challenge."
