River Forest, IL – The Dominican University softball team had some trouble getting the bats going on Sunday afternoon falling to Benedictine 8-3 in game one before dropping game two 10-0.
Game One:
The Stars got on the board first as a leadoff single to right-center by Theresa Wilsterman started things in the second inning. She was advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Malia Gilles before Cecilia Winters-McCarthy came through with a two-out RBI single to right field to plate Wilsterman and give Dominican a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles responded with a two-out triple to knot the score at 1-1 in the fourth before exploding for seven runs over the last three innings to hold an 8-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Dominican went down fighting however as a two-out RBI double to left-center by Gilles scored Makayla Barnes. Winters-McCarthy followed with a single back up the middle to bring Gilles home but it was too little too late as the Stars fell 8-3.
Winters-McCarthy had two of the Stars four hits as she went 2-for-3 in game one with both RBIs.
"We came out strong to start game one but Benedictine started to hit more as the game went on," said Head Coach
Cristina Lukas. "We also didn't help out our cause with a few defensive miscues."
Game Two:
Benedictine rolled the momentum right into game two with a run in the top of the first inning before erupting for six runs in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth to open up a 10-0 advantage.
The Eagles were in control throughout the contest, cruising to a 10-0 win in five innings.
"Benedictine scored a lot of runs in the early innings and it was a hole we couldn't dig out of," continued Coach Lukas. "We haven't found the right combination on the field yet, but what needs to happen soon in order for us to gel better as a team. Tomorrow is a new day and the score is 0-0."
These two teams will square off again tomorrow, Monday, April 11th at 4:00 p.m. in Lisle, IL.
