Dominican Splits with Benedictine to Close Out Regular Season

Lisle, IL – The Dominican University women's volleyball team closed out its regular season with a split of two matches against the Benedictine Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

Match One (25-27, 25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 10-15)

An Emily Schellhase kill off a set from Natalie Jones knotted the opening set at 10-10 before a kill from Ola Magiera put Dominican ahead 19-15. A run of four consecutive points by Benedictine retied the match at 20-20 but a pair of Eagles attack errors gave the Stars a slim 24-23 advantage. Benedictine however would win four of the last five points thanks to three kills and a service ace to take a tough opening set 27-25.

A N. Jones service ace helped the Stars run out to a 10-3 lead in the second that grew to double-digits, 17-7, after a Gabija Sinickaite kill off a feed from Anastasia Labadessa. A late push by the Eagles trimmed the deficit to three, 21-18, before Schellhase halted the momentum at 22-18. Benedictine got as close as two at 22-20 but another kill by Schellhase paired with two Eagles errors swung the set in Dominican's favor 25-22.

A Kill by Gillian Jones made it a 13-6 affair in set three before an Eagles run cut the margin to four, 19-15. Dominican had a key run of four straight points with kills from G. Jones, Labadessa, and Sinickaite to take a hold of the third set, 24-16, before eventually closing it out 25-17.

The fourth set was back and forth in the early going before three straight kills from the Eagles put the home team ahead 14-10. The Stars countered with a five-point run of their own to retake the lead, 19-17, but the Eagles quickly answered with another four-point swing to hold a 21-19 lead. Kills from Schellhase and G. Jones tied the score at 21-21 but errors down the stretch plagued Dominican as it dropped the fourth set 25-23.

A pair of Benedictine kills preceding a service ace helped the Eagles open up some breathing room at 9-5 in the deciding fifth set. Two more kills pushed the differential to five, 11-6, but Dominican answered with kills by Vicky Krzyszkowski and Sinickaite along with another service ace from Labadessa to cut the margin to three, 12-9. The Eagles continued to close sets strong however as kills on three of the final four points won the set 15-10 to complete the match comeback.

G. Jones and Sinickaite paced the offense with 13 kills each while Schellhase joined them in double figures with 11. N. Jones and Labadessa orchestrated the offense with 28 and 21 assists respectively while Sarah Lychock registered 26 digs.

Match Two (19-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-23)

The Eagles took a 13-8 lead early in the first set before a 4-0 run, capped off by a G. Jones service ace, made it a two-point Stars deficit at 15-13. Benedictine responded with a 4-0 run of its own to extended the margin to six, 19-13, which remained the differential at 23-17. Olivia Magnussen held off the first set defeat with a kill to make it a 24-19 affair but the Eagles closed out the set on the next point 25-19.

The Stars rushed out to a 15-7 lead in the second after a service ace from Emily Mahoney. The advantage grew to 10, 22-12, after an Eagles attack error before a Schellhase service ace tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-13 set two win.

Another kill by Schellhase helped Dominican open up an early 9-2 lead in the third that was quickly extended to 13-3 after two more kills from the freshman hitter. A 9-0 run by Benedictine allowed the Eagles to pull within one, 13-12, before coming back to retake the lead at 16-15. A kill by G. Jones stopped the stretch but Benedictine held a 21-19 lead in the closing stages of the set. Dominican countered with a 4-0 run on kills by Sinickaite and Mahoney to give itself a two-point advantage, 23-21, but the Eagles again knotted the score back up at 23-23. Benedictine's momentum would stop there however as two attack errors handed Dominican a 25-23 third set win.

A 7-0 run from the Eagles turned a two-point deficit into a four-point lead at 15-11 in the fourth but a 4-0 run from the Stars, capped off by a service ace from Lychock trimmed the deficit to just one at 18-17. Dominican took six of the next eights point due in part to kills from Sinickatie, Schellhase, and G. Jones to capture a 23-20 lead. Benedictine again pulled to within one, 24-23, but another attack error closed out the set 25-23 and the match 3-1 in the Stars favor.

"I'm glad we were able to pull out a win to finish out our regular season," said Head Coach Cameron Andrew. "It's been a grind and I'm so proud that through everything, this team finished 11-3."

Sinickatie recorded a season-high 16 kills as she swung it at a .300 clip while G. Jones added 11 kills of her own. Labadessa set up the attack with 26 assists while Lychock again registered 26 digs.

"I still think there is room for us to grow and while we only have a short time to get that last puzzle piece in place, I know we can figure it out," continued Coach Andrew. "We are already talented and if we can find the ability to play a little more consistently, we can be dangerous."

The 2-seeded Stars will host a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference semifinal match on Thursday, April 15th at 7:00 p.m. versus Concordia University Chicago.
