Late Home Run Propels Stars to Game Two Win

River Forest, IL – The Dominican University baseball team traveled down the street to take on the Concordia University Chicago Cougars in a doubleheader rematch falling 16-6 in game one before coming away with the 9-7 win in game two.

Game One:

The Stars started the scoring in game one when Zach Rigdon hit a triple to right-field before tagging up and crossing home plate to give them the early 1-0 lead. The Cougars would come out in the bottom of the inning scoring eight runs of their own to take the lead at 8-1.

To lead off for the Stars in the third inning Kevin Evans was walked. Evans advanced to third before Rigdon hit a single to bring him home to cut CUC's lead to 8-2. CUC responded with two runs of their own extending its lead to 10-2.

Dominican got things going in the top of the fourth when Grayson Downing led off with a double to right-field. A sacrifice fly and then a single by Evans brought Downing around to home plate to make it 10-3. Tyler Trojan then stepped up and hit a double which allowed Evans to advance to third before Rigdon singled to bring Evans home and to cut the Cougars lead to 10-4. The bases were loaded before Garrett Wano was walked and then Matthew Partridge was hit by a pitch to bring in two more runners cutting the Stars deficit to 10-6.

The Stars wouldn't be able to respond the rest of the game as the Cougars scored one apiece in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning. CUC was also be able to bring three more runners around the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning before scoring one more in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 16-6 victory in eight innings.

Game Two:

To start things off in game two, back-to-back doubles by Rigdon and Brandon Diedrich gave the Stars an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Cougars responded in the bottom of the inning with a run to tie it up at one apiece.

Downing singled before advancing to third in the top of the second inning. A sacrifice fly then allowed Downing to tag up before crossing home plate to give the Stars the lead at 2-1. CUC responded again in the bottom of the second and third inning bringing a runner around the bases in each to give them the 3-2 lead.

Matt Galdi started things off for the Stars in the top of the fourth inning with a walk. Nick Roeper was hit by a pitch before Trojan singled to the right field. Rigdon stepped up next, hitting a single allowing Galdi to score tying it at 3-3. The Cougars then walked Diedrich to bring in another run before a sacrifice fly by the Stars pushed the lead to 5-3. The Cougars answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie it up 5-5.

CUC was able to bring in a run home in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to gain the 7-5 lead. In the top of the seventh inning, the Stars responded as Downing was walked before stealing second. A triple by Galdi and a double by Roeper brought in two scores to tie up at 7-7.

In the top of the eighth inning, Rigdon leadoff for Dominican with a single. Wano then stepped up big for the Stars, hitting his third home run of the season to seal the 9-7 victory.

"In game one we got buried early. I like the way we fought but, in the end, it was too much to climb out of," said Head Coach Steve Hardman. "In game two we grinded out at-bats in a back and forth game. Ultimately, Wano's two-run home run in the eighth secured it for us. It was a must-win for us in our hopes for a conference tournament bid."

Offensively, Rigdon had things going for the Stars in both games as he went 6-for-9 on the day with three runs scored and two RBIs.

The Stars will return to action Friday, April 23rd when they host Aurora University for a doubleheader match-up at Wintrust Field with the first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
