Stars Win South Division Title

River Forest, IL – The Dominican University women's volleyball team capped off a terrific season by capturing the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) South Division title over Concordia University Chicago (25-14, 25-16, 24-26, 25-16) on Sunday night.

A Vicky Krzyszkowski kill off the set up by Natalie Jones put Dominican ahead 12-6 in the opening set before Jones found Emily Schellhase to extend the margin to eight at 19-11. The Cougars hung around as they trailed 21-14 before four straight points by the Stars, capped off by an Anastasia Labadessa kill, gave Dominican the 25-14 first set win.

An Emily Mahoney finish from Sarah Lychock allowed the Stars to run out to a 10-4 advantage in the second set before a Gillian Jones kill held the margin at 16-10. The Cougars cut the deficit to four, 20-16, but once again Dominican closed out the set strong as five straight points, three of which came via G. Jones kills, cemented a 25-16 set win.

The third set was a different story as the Cougars jumped out to a 13-8 lead but a N. Jones service ace trimmed the deficit to two at 14-12. Back-to-back kills by Mahoney followed by a Cougars attack error knotted the match at 17-17 before the visitors quickly responded with three straight points to hold the upper hand at 20-17. A Stars run of 5-of-6 points tied the match back up at 23-23 but timely kills by the Cougars helped them stave off defeat with a 26-24 third set win.

A Labadessa set was finished by Gabija Sinickaite to stretch the Stars lead to 14-8 before the duo teamed up again to make it a 17-8 Dominican advantage. Schellhase held the margin at nine, 20-11, before a pair of Cougars errors allowed the Stars to close in on the victory at 23-14. Another Mahoney kill made it match point at 24-15 before a Concordia Chicago error closed out a 25-16 fourth set win and a 3-1 match win.

"I'm so proud of this group," said Head Coach Cameron Andrew. "It's hard to even put it into words as this team has dealt with all of the obstacles the world has thrown at them and they just kept grinding."

G. Jones paced a diverse offensive attack with 13 kills while Sinickaite had 12 while swinging it at a .370 clip. Schellhase closed out an impressive freshman campaign with 10 kills as Labadessa and N. Jones shared the setting duties with 26 and 20 assists respectively. On the defensive end, Lychock recorded 19 digs with Olivia Magnuessen notching six blocks.

"This senior class has given so much to the program and I can't ever fully thank them for that," continued Coach Andrew. "They came into a program that was 12-21 before they arrived and took it all the way to tonight."

"They are all such wonderful people and are going to go on to do amazing things. I am so proud of Emily, Natalie, Gillian, Olivia, Haley, Anastasia, Madi, and Madeline."
