#3 Stars Stellar Season Ends in National Semifinal

Salem, VA – The #3 Dominican University men's volleyball teams' historic season came to an end, falling to #1 Carthage College in straight sets (23-25, 19-25, 28-30) in the NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship semifinals on Friday afternoon.

A George Kougan kill kept the Stars within one-point, 9-8, in the opening set before Jack McGuire found Troy Kates as Dominican took a 15-13 lead at the media timeout. A Mat Molloy finish nudged the difference to three, 17-14, but three straight kills by Carthage allowed the Firebirds to retake the lead, 20-18, and force a Stars timeout. Carthage held a slim three-point lead in the closing moments of the set before another kill by Kates kept hope alive at 24-22 before the Firebirds ultimately won the first set 25-23.

A Trey Cowan finish kept Dominican within three, 9-6, at the beginning of the second set but an 11-5 run by Carthage opened up the play at 20-11. Consecutive Firebirds' attack errors pulled the Stars within six, 22-16, to force a Carthage timeout which allowed the home team to settle itself down and take set two 25-19.

McGuire found Molloy for the kill to knot the score at 14-14 in the third set that kept a one-point differential throughout as Dominican led 20-19 before forcing a Carthage timeout. A kill by Kougan followed by a pair of Firebirds' attack errors gave the Stars a slim 23-21 lead, making Carthage burn their final timeout to talk things over. Bregin DeMarco set up Kougan to make it set point, 26-25, but the Firebirds would fend off a total of four set points before winning the final three points to win a tight third set 30-28 and end Dominican's hopes of prolonging its season for one more set.

Cowan and Kougan led the offense with 11 kills each while the latter picked up the double-double with 10 digs to go along with seven blocks.

Dominican's season comes to an end in the Final Four for the second time in the last three full seasons with an overall mark of 17-2.
