Stars Come Up Short to Bluejays

Elmhurst, IL – The Dominican University baseball team traveled to Elmhurst University for a single nine-inning matchup, falling short 6-5 in extra innings.

The Bluejays got things going in the first inning as they were able to bring two runners around the bases to give them the early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, Matt Galdi doubled before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Ryan Simak stepped up next hitting an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Stars responded again in the top of the fourth when Brandon Diedrich hit a triple to right-field. With just one out, Keegan Brandt's RBI ground out allowed Diedrich to advance home to tie it at 2 apiece.

Elmhurst regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, as it was able to bring in three runs to make it 5-2.

In the top of the eighth, Simak reached first on a fielder's choice by the Bluejays. Back-to-back singles by Camron Stafford and Alberto Garcia put Stars in scoring position before Zach Rigdon hit a sacrifice fly to right-center field, allowing Simak to cross home plate to make it 5-3.

A lead-off walk by Diedrich got the momentum going for the Stars in the top of the ninth inning. Brandt followed by hitting a single through the left side before a sacrifice bunt from Garrett Wano advanced the runners. A sacrifice fly by Bryant Bagshaw brought Diedrich home to cut the lead to 5-4. With the bases loaded, Simak grinded out a walk to bring in the tying run as the teams head to the bottom of the ninth.

The Stars shutdown the Bluejays in the bottom half of the frame as the game went into extra innings.

Dominican put themselves in a great position to take the lead in the top of the tenth inning as they had runners on the corners with one out but couldn't get a timely hit or productive out.

With one out in the bottom of the tenth Elmhurst walked it off with a solo home run to lift them over Dominican 6-5.

"We squandered a lot of scoring opportunities that came back and haunted us in the end," said Head Coach Steve Hardman. "When you don't execute the little things right you are not going to win many ball games. Right now we are not doing the things it takes to win close games."

The Stars return to action on Saturday, May 1st when they travel to Rockford University for a doubleheader matchup starting at noon.
