Rosemont, IL – The Dominican University softball team's bats erupted for 13 hits on Wednesday night on the way to a 7-1 win in a non-conference win over Mount Mary University.
The Blue Angels opened up the scoring in the opening frame with a pair of two-out singles but the Stars responded in the second inning with a leadoff double driven over the left fielders' head by Theresa Wilsterman. Olivia Johnson stepped in next with a triple to centerfield to tie the game at one before an RBI ground out by Cecilia Winters-McCarthy gave Dominican a 2-1 lead after two innings of play.
The Stars broke the game open in the fifth inning with five runs as Kennedy Marvin jump-started the inning with a triple down the left-field line. Zoe Deeringer followed with an RBI single to double the margin to 3-1. With one out and runners on first and second, Winters-McCarthy delivered another RBI single for her second RBI of the night. The big blow came from Malia Gilles as her two-RBI double off the left-field fence busted open the contest at 6-1.
Mount Mary would not go quietly in the seventh however as the first two runners reached base safely to keep the pressure on Dominican's new arm, Brenna Angwin. She settled down however as a pair of fielder choices and a ground out closed out the 7-1 Stars win.
Allyson Dilday picked up her seventh win of the season, throwing six innings of one-run ball while fanning eight batters.
"The team was solid from all standpoints tonight," said Head Coach
Cristina Lukas. "22 of our 25 players contributed to the win."
12 different batters recorded hits for the Stars with Wilsterman leading the way with a perfect 3-for-3 night to go along with two runs scored.
"New things seem to be clicking every day and they are taking some momentum into our conference games this weekend," concluded Coach Lukas
Dominican heads into the final weekend of league play on Friday, April 30th as it begins a four-game set at Rockford. The Stars are currently one game out of the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division at 5-11 and take on the third place Regents who sit at 9-7 in NACC play. Concordia Chicago is 6-10 in the fourth spot but has a tough four-game slate with #25 Aurora.
