RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Dominican University's second-ranked men's volleyball program secured another thrilling, five-set victory on Friday evening, coming back from 2-1 down to defeat UC Santa Cruz at home in non-conference action.
The Stars won the opening set 25-19, but a resilient UC Santa Cruz group took the next two frames, 25-18 and 25-23, to go ahead 2-1 in the match. DU cruised to a 25-18 fourth set victory, sending Dominican to its seventh five-set affair this season. A back-and-forth final frame saw DU having the final say as the Stars scored three-straight down 14-13 to pull off the 16-14 win.
Dominican is now 18-1 and won 14 straight matches, boasting a 6-1 record in five-set contests. The attack was led by
George Kougan, who finished with 24 kills at a blistering .455 clip and adding eight blocks, one solo and seven assists.
Trey Cowan also had an effective night on the outside with 16 kills while also racking up six digs and one service ace.
Jack McGuire had a season-high 49 assists and had five kills, three block assists and six digs.
Jacob Bush and
Mat Molloy continued to be forces in the middle with six and four block assists, respectively.
Christian Guymon led the defensive effort with 13 digs.
