Davenport, FL. – RV Dominican University Baseball began the RussMatt Invitational with a doubleheader against Roger Williams University on Saturday.

How it Happened:
-Pitching ruled the opening of the game, as Sophomore
Alex Voegele allowed only one runner through the first two innings.
-In the top of the third, Freshman
Austin Long singled in the infield and stole second, but the Stars could not bring him home.
-Senior
Matthew Earley recorded a lead-off single in the top of the fourth, but was picked off in an attempt to steal, leaving the game scoreless at 0-0
-Roger Williams broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI groundout.
-Trailing 1-0, Dominican found their bats in the top of the fifth, as Long drove in Junior
Connor Kalinowski with a single to knot the game at 1-1.
-Voegele closed out the fifth in 1-2-3 fashion, including two strikeouts.
-The Stars took a 2-1 lead into the top of the sixth after Senior
Niko Krecu was able to reach home on an error in a great effort.
-Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the final scheduled inning, RWU loaded the bases and walked in the tying run, sending the game to extra innings.
-Both squads were held scoreless in the eighth.
-In the bottom of the ninth inning, Roger Williams reached home on a fielder's choice, as DU fell in the opener by a final score of 3-2.
Shining Stars:
-Sophomore
Alex Voegele dealt in his second start of the season, pitching 6 innings while picking up 6 strikeouts and only allowing one hit and one run.
-Freshman
Austin Long finished the game going 2-2 with an RBI.
-Senior
Tyler Johnson went 0-3 but picked up DU's other RBI in the contest.
-Senior
Matthew Earley was 1-2 with a walk.

How it Happened:
-Roger Williams opened the scoring in the top of the first after a single.
-After the Stars went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first, Graduate Student
Matthew Hannafin bounced back with a 1-2-3 outing in the top of the second.
-In the bottom of the third inning, the Stars would load the bases after a double by Junior
Connor Kalinowski, a single by Freshman
Austin Long, and Senior
Zach Helein reaching via a hit by pitch. Senior
Ricky Powell then stepped up and blasted a double into left, clearing the bases, giving Dominican a 3-1 lead.
-DU added more offense in the bottom of the fourth, as Junior
Alex Garcia led off with a single, followed by Sophomore
Marco Stawski 's first homer of the season, stretching the Stars' lead to 5-1.
-Hannafin continued to deal for Dominican, preserving the Stars' 5-1 lead after the top of the fifth.
-Back-to-back doubles by Senior
Tyler Johnson and Sophomore
Christian Pogorzelski to open the bottom of the fifth pushed the DU lead to 6-1.
-Freshman
Hunter Zierleyn entered the game in relief for Hannafin at the top of the sixth and got out of the inning unscathed.
-The Stars tacked on another run to their tally in the bottom of the sixth, with Long scoring on a wild pitch after opening the inning with a double.
-Zierleyn shut the door on Roger Williams in the top of the seventh, as the Stars took game two by a final of 7-1 and split the series.
Shining Stars:
-Sophomore
Marco Stawski was 1-3 with a two-run home run.
-Senior
Ricky Powell finished 1-2, including a base-clearing RBI double
-Senior
Tyler Johnson and Freshman
Austin Long combined for 4 hits and 2 doubles.
-Graduate Student
Matthew Hannafin went 5.0 innings on the mound, notching 3 strikeouts while only allowing one earned run.
