Doug Burchett

Doug Burchett enters his second season as head coach and eleventh season overall with the Stars after joining the volleyball staff in 2015 as an assistant coach.

In his first season at the helm of the program, the Stars finished with an overall record of 19-8.  Burchett helped guide the Stars to both the NACC Regular Season and Conference tournament and into the NCAA Round of 16. The coaching staff was named NACC Coaching Staff of the Year for the third year in a row.

The Stars experienced one of its most successful seasons ever in 2022 under Burchett, who was named 2022 AVCA West Region Coach of the Year.  The Stars finished with an overall record of 25-2, a NACC Conference Regular Season and NACC Conference Tournament Title, and an NCAA Elite Eight finish. The staff was named NACC Coaching Staff of the Year.

Burchett has helped guide the Stars to conference championships in 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2024.  In his ten years with the program, the Stars have achieved their first NCAA Tournament berth and Elite Eight finish in the 2017 season, Final Four appearances in 2018 and 2021, an Elite Eight finish in 2022, and most recently a Sweet 16 finish in 2024. He was also named the 2018 AVCA Division III Men's National Assistant Coach of the Year.

Under his leadership, the Stars have collected a number of individual honors, highlighted by eleven AVCA All American Awards, four Conference Player of the Year, and forty six All Conference Players.

The two-time Illinois High School Association state champion from Wheaton Warrenville South, Burchett starred for the WWS Tigers from 2002 through 2005, earning all-conference honors from the DuPage Valley Conference four years in a row and back-to-back IHSA All-State selections as he became the IHSA all-time leader in career assists. In 2016, Wheaton-Warrenville South inducted Burchett into the Tigers’ Hall of Fame.

Following his decorated high school career, Burchett went on to play for the University of Illinois men’s club volleyball team where he helped the Illini to a second place finish at the 2008 National Collegiate Volleyball Federation (NCVF) National Tournament and earned All-Big Ten honors in 2009 and 2010.

In addition to his standout playing career, Burchett possesses an abundance of coaching experience including spending the 2009 season with the University of Illinois women’s volleyball team as an assistant coach. That year the Illini finished second in the Big Ten and went all the way to the NCAA Division I Sweet 16.
