Men’s Soccer Wins Fifth NAC Title

With a 5-0 win over the Rockford College Regents on Friday afternoon, the Dominican University Stars captured their fifth Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Men’s Soccer championship in as many years. The Stars finish the NAC regular season with 31 points at 10-0-1 in conference play, edging the Aurora University Spartans who finished the 2010 NAC season with 30 points at 10-1-0.
Despite 16 first half shots from the Stars, the match was scoreless into the 73rd minute when Mike Kapusta (Bartlett, Ill.) ripped a shot into the Rockford College goal for his team-leading 13th goal of the season. The goal relieved some of the pressure from the Stars who went on to score four more goals over the next 7:40.
Andy Lynch (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) and Leo Elizalde (Waukegan, Ill.) each added a goal while Lio Tovar (Cicero, Ill.) scored a pair of goals just 97 seconds apart in the 79th minute and 81st minute to cap Dominican’s offensive outburst.
The Stars dominated the stat sheet, peppering the Regent goal with 36 shots, putting 16 on frame, while not surrendering a single shot to Rockford.
Dominican is now unbeaten in 52 regular season NAC matches all-time, dating back to the conference’s inception in 2006. During that span the Stars are 50-0-2 against the rest of the NAC, outscoring their NAC foes 255-12. Dominican has won all five NAC regular season titles and will look to win their fifth NAC Tournament crown in as many years when the 2010 NAC Men’s Soccer Tournament kicks off on Sunday. The Stars will receive a first-round bye and then host a tournament semifinal match on Tuesday afternoon.
