Men’s Soccer Eliminated In Shootout Fashion

The Dominican University men’s soccer team and Calvin College Knights played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon with the Knights slipping past the Stars and into the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships round of 16 on a shootout 3-1.
Dominican drew first blood, with Mike Kapusta (Bartlett, Ill.) taking advantage of a restart opportunity in the 46th minute to notch his team-leading 15th goal of the season.
The Stars held to their one-goal lead into the 77th minute when Calvin’s Miles Colago netted the equalizer with a header off of a long throw-in by Mike Sanderson.
The 1-1 score held up through two overtime periods sending the game to a shootout to decide which side would advance in the national tournament. In the shootout, Kapsuta staked the Stars to a 1-0 lead after Dominican’s Maxwell Gutbrod (Slinger, Wis.) stoned Calvin’s Scott Hooker. Calvin evened the score in the second round as 6’7” Ryan Bratt stopped Jeff Atkins’ (Naperville, Ill.) penalty attempt. Bratt stopped both Ryan Roberts’ and Andy Lynch’s penalty attempts in the third and fourth round while Calvin’s Tyler Vegter and Joe Broekhuizen made good on their attempts to give the Knights the edge.
Dominican finishes out the season with a 19-1-2 overall record while the Knights, now 16-2-4 live to see another round in the DIII Men’s Soccer Championship, facing the winner of the UW-Whitewater regional next Friday.
