The Dominican University men’s soccer team was on the winning side of 3-2 battle with the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons in the semifinal round of 2010 Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Men’s Soccer Tournament as
Kyle Boekeloo (Woodridge, Ill.) broke a 2-2 tie in the 52
nd minute with his second goal of the season.
Petar Milenkovich (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) gave the Stars a 1-0 advantage in the 39
th minute as he collected a loose ball near the top of the box and one-timed a shot past the Falcons’ Samuel Ische and inside the near post. The score was the freshman forward’s fourth of the season.
Three minutes later
Ryan Roberts (Elmhurst, Ill.) extended the Stars’ lead with his ninth goal of the season. Roberts carried the ball up the left flank, dribbling through traffic before sliding a shot past Ische.
Less than a minute later, Concordia’s Tyler Harris received a pass from Victor Mendoza and beat Dominican’s
Miguel Mondragon (Broadview, Ill.) to pull the Falcons within in a goal at 2-1 in the 43
rd minute. The score remained 2-1 into the second half when the Falcons scored their second unanswered goal as Mendoza again played a perfect ball to teammate Jacob Pope who beat the Stars’
Dan Cimicata (St. Louis, Mo.) to even the score, 2-2. The goal was Pope’s third of the season.
With the score even, Boekeloo collected a ball knocked down inside the box and turned and ripped a shot that beat Ische and landed in the side-netting inside the far post. The score held up, proving to be the eventual game-winner and vaulting the Stars into the championship round of the NAC Tournament where they will meet the Aurora University Spartans.
The Stars outshot the Falcons 20-6, putting 12 shots on frame to just four shots on goal for Concordia. The Stars also doubled-up the Falcons in corner kick opportunities, holding an 8-4 advantage.
Cimicata picked up his second win in goal for the Stars, playing the final 45 minutes in goal for Dominican.
The Stars, now 17-1-1, will host the NAC Tournament Championship match for the fifth consecutive year. The matchup with the Spartans is slated for Saturday with the time still to be determined.
