The Dominican University men’s basketball team dropped to 2-2 on the season, falling to the Cornell College Rams 75-67 on Tuesday night. The Stars led 34-24 at the half, but were outscored 51-33 over the game’s final 20 minutes, including an 18-3 run to open the second half and give the Rams a 40-37 lead.
With the score tied at 16-all with 8:41 remaining in the first half, Dominican’s
Darrius Nelson (Michigan City, Ind.) ignited an 18-6 run that gave the Stars their biggest lead of the game at 34-22 with a lay in and then got a steal and fed
Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) for a basket and a foul.
Cornell reclaimed the lead, 38-37, with 16:05 to play on a lay in by Reggie Greenwood. After Cornell pulled out to a 58-51 lead with under ten minutes remaining, Dominican eventually knotted the score at 67-67 on a pair of
Marquis Turley (Grand Rapids, Mich.) free throws. However, the Rams scored the final eight points as the Stars were held scoreless over the final 2:52 of regulation.
Turley led all scorers with 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field, going 5-for-6 from the foul line. Turley failed to connect on a pair of attempts from three-point range as Dominican went 2-for-10 from behind the three-point arc.
Harris and Nelson chipped in 13 points apiece while
Durelle Garmon (Chicago, Ill.) scored 12 points off the bench to round out four Stars in double-figures.
Greenwood led Cornell with 16 points, converting on all four of his attempts from the foul line.
Dominican returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Bloomington, Ill., to take on the fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University Titans. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in IWU’s Shirk Center.
