Clock Strikes Midnight On Stars' Tournament Run

Men's soccer falls to Calvin in national semifinal

Maxwell Gutbrod made three saves in the Stars' 1-0 loss to Calvin in the national semifinals.
The 2009 NCAA Division III Championship run came to a close for the Dominican University men's soccer team on Friday night with a 1-0 loss to Calvin College in San Antonio, Texas, in the national semifinal round. The Stars season closes with a 19-2-3 overall record.

The lone goal of the game came in the 78th minute of play as Calvin's Brad Hethius beat Dominican's Maxwell Gutbrod (Slinger, Wis.) who fell to 8-1-1 on the season in goal for the Stars, surrendering just his fourth goal against in over 1,030 minutes in goal for the Stars.

After the two teams felt each other out for much of the first half, trading a couple of dangerous scoring opportunities apiece, the Knights controlled much of the second half, pressuring the Stars until finally finding the back of the net with under thirteen minutes to play. The Stars then went on the offensive but ran out of time.

The Stars were making their first NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Final Four appearance in program history, stringing together a 13-game win streak after starting the season 6-1-3.

"We start seven freshmen and sophomores," said Stars' head coach Erick Baumann, "and being here might have been a little overwhelming for some of the guys. It's a lesson that we will now learn from."
