Stars Ride Elizalde’s Bike To OT Victory

Box Score The MSOE Raiders were looking to become the first Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) team to knock off the Dominican University men’s soccer team in NAC regular season action, taking a 1-0 lead in the final two minutes of the first half, but Dominican evened the score in the 75th minute and then earned the victory in the 102nd minute on Leo Elizalde’s (Waukegan, Ill.) fourth goal of the season.

Sophomore Jake Tenut gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead, tallying his first goal of the season on his only shot of the game in the in the 44th minute.  Santiago Onuchuku carried up the left side, working his way into the Dominican 18-yard box before sending a cross that Tenut would redirect into the back of the Stars’ goal for the 1-0 advantage.

Dominican ramped up the offensive intensity in the second half but still found themselves playing from behind with just over 15 minutes to play until Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) dropped a pass to Edwin Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill.) just outside the 18-yard box and Rodriguez blasted a shot with his right foot that beat the Raider goalkeeper before banging off the crossbar and dropping behind the goal line to level the score at 1-1.  The score was the third goal of the season for Rodriguez as Dominican found itself playing from behind for just the fourth time all season.

The score remained tied into the 102nd minute as Elizalde collected a ball with his back to the goal after a scramble inside the Raiders’ six-yard box.  Elizalde left his feet and connected on a bicycle kick, lifting a shot over MSOE’s Garrett Farin and into the back of the Raiders’ goal to lift the Stars to the victory.

The win improves the Stars’ record to 13-2-0 overall and a perfect 8-0-0 in NAC action, extending the program’s unbeaten streak in NAC play to 60 matches dating back to the beginning of the conference in 2006.  The Stars, with just three regular season games scheduled, will travel to Rockford College on Wednesday to take on the Regents.  Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.  With a win, the Stars secure a spot in the NAC Men’s Soccer Tournament for the sixth straight season.
