Box Score The Dominican University men’s soccer team posted an impressive 4-nil victory over the Aurora University Spartans on Tuesday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2011 Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Men’s Soccer Tournament pushing the Stars into the conference championship match for the sixth time in as many years.
Freshman
Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) got the Stars on the board in the 37
th minute, notching his team-leading ninth goal of the season.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Stars into the second half and into the 55
th minute when
Ryan Roberts (Elmhurst, Ill.) scored for the second time in as many games, gathering a rebound of an
Edwin Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill.) header that deflected off the back of an Aurora defender before Roberts beat Nick Sloan, the Spartans’ goalkeeper, to give the Stars a 2-0 advantage.
Just one minute later, senior
Edwin Lagunas (Waukegan, Ill.) netted the first of his two goals of the match, collecting a failed clearance attempt by the Spartan defense before beating Sloan for his sixth goal of the season. Lagunas then added another unassisted goal in the 81
st minute to round out the Stars’ offensive effort.
Dominican doubled up Aurora on the stat sheet in shots, ripping 20 shots to just 10 for the Spartans and putting nine shots on frame compared to four for Aurora. The Stars also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Dominican’s
Dan Cimicata (St. Louis, Mo.) improved to 17-2-0 in goal for the Stars, lowering his goals against average to 0.76 while picking up his sixth shutout of the season. The Stars’ sophomore goalkeeper faced ten shots, making four saves in the winning effort.
The Stars, now 17-2-0 on the season, will meet the MSOE Raiders in the NAC Tournament Championship on Saturday in River Forest. The Raiders, the number three seed in the tournament, advanced to the championship round with a 2-0 win over the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons on Tuesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on the Stars’ West Campus Field.
