Going To The “SHIPS”

Box Score The Dominican University Stars captured the 2011 Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Men’s Soccer Tournament Championship on Saturday afternoon, overpowering the MSOE Raiders 4-nil to earn the Stars’ tenth consecutive bid to the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships.

Lio Tovar (Cicero, Ill.) got the Stars on the board in the 42nd minute, taking advantage of a direct kick from 30-yards out.  The goal was the NSCAA 2010 All-American’s eighth of the season and gave the Stars a 1-0 advantage at the half.

After the Raiders came out strong to open the second half, Dominican opened things up and put the game away with three goals in a nine-minute span.  In the 57th minute, Ryan Roberts (Elmhurst, Ill.) got on the end of a throw from junior Andy Lynch (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.), flicking the ball into the side netting for Roberts’ seventh tally of the season.

In the 65th minute, Edwin Lagunas (Waukegan, Ill.) picked up his seventh goal of the season, beating the MSOE goalkeeper to give the Stars a 3-0 advantage.  One minute later, freshman Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa) added an insurance goal to cap of the Stars’ scoring.

Dominican’s Dan Cimicata (St. Louis, Mo.) made five saves, all in the second half, to pick up his seventh shutout of the season and third in as many games.

The win improves the Stars to 18-2-0 overall and Dominican now awaits the release of the 2011 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships brackets on Monday to find out when and where they will play in the national tournament.  The brackets, including the entire field of 61 teams, are scheduled to be released on Monday at 12:00 PM.
