Second Half Woes Continue To Doom Stars

Box Score Leading 29-25 at the break and in search of their first win of the season, the Dominican University men’s basketball team was outscored 46-34 over the final 20 minutes, coming up on the short end of a 71-63 affair with the Rockford College Regents on Wednesday evening.  The loss drops the Stars to 0-8 on the season and 0-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC).

The Regents’ Tory Minnifield knotted the game at 33 with 16:49 remaining and then put Rockford ahead on a layup just forty seconds later to give the Regents their first lead of the game.  Minnifield’s buckets were part of a 14-0 run that was capped by a Paul Hall three-pointer that put Rockford ahead 43-33 with under 15 minutes to play.

The Stars made a run of their own, eventually evening the score at 52-all as Brandon Barkley (Detroit, Mich.) scored two of his nine with just over nine to play.  However, the Regents went on to score ten straight to regain control and never looked back.

Darius Nelson (Michigan City, Ind.) led the Stars with 17 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field while Barkley and freshman Kevin Rollins (Bloomington, Ill.) added nine points apiece.

Minnifield led all scorers on the night, pouring in 24 points while Dominique Walker and Hall added 19 and 10 respectively.

Dominican shot near 49 percent from the field (23-47), including going 7-for-15 from three-point distance.  The Stars held the Regents to 32 percent shooting from the field in the first half but the Regents managed to shoot a blistering 17-for-27 in the second stanza.

The Stars will travel to Watertown, Wis., on Saturday to take on the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders.  Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
