The Dominican University men’s basketball team scored 16 points in the first ten minutes, opening a 16-6 lead while shooting 7-for-8 from the field before the Eagles went on their own 14-4 run to knot the game at 20-all with 12:20 to play in the first half.
Minutes later, the Eagles Cameron Snelling ignited a 14-2 run for the Eagles. The senior scored six points on the run, finishing the night with a game-high 29 points on 11-for-18 shooting and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Eagles extended the lead to 16 (44-28) with 2:47 remaining in the first half before the Stars closed out the opening frame with a 9-0 run of their own, capped by a
Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) tip-in at the buzzer to cut the lead to seven at the break.
The Stars opened the second half as freshman
Kyle Sherwin (White Lake, Mich.) picked up a hoop and harm to cut the Eagle-lead to 44-40.
Benedictine continued to try to put the Stars away, going on a 13-4 run to open a 57-44 lead with 13:25 to play. However, Dominican refused to go away, chipping the lead down to three on
Jovan Turley’s (Grand Rapids, Mich.) lay in with 5:40 to play. After a stop on defense, a Dominican turnover led to a Snelling fastbreak with
Durelle Garmon (Chicago, Ill.) giving up a three-point play. The Stars committed 15 turnovers on the night, leading to 23 points for the Eagles.
On Benedictine’s next possession, Terry Licht put the nail in the Stars coffin, connecting on a three-point jumper to put the Eagles ahead by nine before coasting to an 81-71 win.
Turley finished the night with a team-high 24 points on 8-for-14 shooting for the Stars in the losing effort. It was season-high for the Stars’ 6’1 senior guard.
Harris picked up his second double-double of the season, logging 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Stars.
The loss drops Dominican to 7-15 overall and 4-10 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC).
