The Dominican University men’s basketball team closed out the 2010-2011 campaign on Saturday evening with a thrilling 84-81 victory over the Marian University Sabres in Fon du Lac, Wis.
Jovan Turley (Grand Rapids, Mich.)scored a game-high 22 points on 8-for-14 shooting while going 5-for-7 from the foul line.
The largest lead of the game for either team was a seven-point Stars’ lead, 55-48, with 10:48 remaining in the second half. However, Dominican found itself trailing by three with 19 seconds remaining before
Milos Mandic (Munster, Ind.) nailed a three, his only three of the game, with nine seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
In the overtime, Dominican trailed 78-77 with 1:13 to play before freshman
Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) knocked down a three-pointer to give Dominican a two-point lead and they would hang on, knocking down 4 four of six free throw attempts in the final minute.
Darrius Nelson (Michigan City, Ind.) added 19 points in the winning effort while Mandic rounded out three players in double-figures for the Stars with 11 points in 23 minutes off the Stars’ bench.
The Stars end the 2010-2011 season with an 8-17 overall record after starting the season 6-4 in the first ten games.
