Box Score The Dominican University men’s soccer team posted its second consecutive shutout in Central Region action on Saturday afternoon, topping the Calvin College Knights 3-0. The matchup, featuring two of the region’s top six teams, was a rematch of last year’s NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships Second Round and the 2009 Final Four.
Freshman
Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa), making his first collegiate-career start, scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Stars in the 43
rd minute. Junior
Leo Elizalde (Wheeling, Ill.) picked up his team-leading fifth point on the play as he led Marvin with a pass behind the Knights’ defense.
Dominican added late insurance goals as
Edwin Lagunas (Waukegan, Ill.) took advantage of a costly Calvin College turnover and buried a shot in the back of the net in the 84
th minute.
Lio Tovar, a 2010 NSCAA First Team All-America selection, then tallied his first goal of the season as he collected a rebound of his own header and beat Calvin’s Michael Dolan in the 89
th minute to give Dominican a three-goal advantage.
Calvin outshot the Stars 15-10, but it was the Stars that put five shots on goal compared to just one shot on frame for the Knights. Sophomore goalkeeper
Dan Cimicata (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up his second straight shutout victory while improving to 3-1-0 on the season and 5-1-0 in his career.
The Stars will open Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play next Saturday, traveling to Madison, Wis., to take on the Edgewood College Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 PM on the Eagles Breese Stevens Field.
