Stars Outshine Bears of Washington University

Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. – In a matchup between the NSCAA’s top two teams in the Central Region, the No. 2 Stars of Dominican University took down the previously undefeated No. 1 Bears of Washington University (Mo.) 3-1 today on Dominican’s West Campus Field. The match also had significance on the national level, as the teams are currently ranked fourth (Washington) and 15th (Dominican) in the NSCAA Coaches’ Poll.  With the win, the Stars improve to 7-1 overall and remain 2-0 in Northern Athletics Conference play.

Lio Tovar (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) opened things up for the Stars by netting his third goal of the season in the 19th minute, and the 1-0 Stars’ lead would stay intact over the next 20 minutes until the Bears found the back of the net in the 39th minute to tie things up 1-1 going into halftime.

Goalkeeper Dan Cimicata (St. Louis, Mo./Trinity Catholic) would protect the Stars’ end of the field with his third and fourth saves through 67 minutes of play before Edwin Lagunas (Waukegan, Ill./Carmel Catholic) put the Stars on top for good in the 73rd minute with assist from Lio Tovar. 

Dominican would keep attacking with three more shots in the next 10 minutes, and Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa/Dowling) would extend the Stars’ lead to 3-1 in the 83rd minute by knocking in his fifth goal of the season .  Ryan Roberts (Elmhurst, Ill./York) assisted the goal, bringing his assist total to three for the season.

The Stars’ win over Washington marks the fifth time this season that they have taken down a Central Region top ten team.  Next, they will turn back to conference play as they host the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran College Sept. 27 and the Sabres of Marian University on Oct. 1 in Dominican’s Homecoming contest. Game times are 4 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
