Slow Start Dooms Stars In Clash With Rival Cougars

Box Score The Dominican University Stars committed turnovers on their first seven possessions on Wednesday night, falling behind neighborhood rival, the Concordia Chicago Cougars, 13-0 in the first five minutes before sophomore Matt Kuzniar jump-started the Stars' offense with a three with 13:51 to play in the opening half.  Dominican went on to score the next 13 points to even the score at 13-13 with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half.

Dominican eventually took a brief lead, 23-22, on a Kyle Sherwin free throw at the 5:25 mark but the Cougars quickly rattled off the next five points to reclaim the lead for the remainder of the night, en route to a 67-55 win over the Stars in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) men's basketball action.

Darrius Nelson and Brandon Barkley led the Stars' offense with 13 points apiece. Nelson, going 4-for-14 from the field on the night, became the latest player to join the Dominican University 1,000-point club as he scored his first basket of the night with 12:51 remaining in the first half.

As a team, the Stars managed to shoot just 31.5 percent from the field (17-54) and committed a season-high 20 turnovers on the night.

The loss drops Dominican to 3-15 on the season and 1-9 in NAC play.  On Saturday, the Stars will travel to Madison, Wis., to take on the Edgewood College Eagles. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. in the Edgedome.
