Offense Slows But Stars Push Win Streak To Eight

Box Score Averaging nearly six goals per game in their last seven matches, the Dominican University men’s soccer team scored just one goal on Wednesday afternoon but still ran their season-best winning streak to eight as the Stars edged the Aurora University Spartans, 1-0, to improve to 10-1-1 on the season and a perfect 7-0-0 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play.

The Stars’ red-hot offense showed signs of slowing early in the game as Ryan Roberts (Elmhurst, Ill.), the Stars’ leading scorer on the season with nine goals, redirected a cross from Leo Elizalde (Waukegan, Ill.), missing the goal wide right.

In the 20th minute, Andy Lynch’s (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) free kick from 40-yards out was saved by Aurora’s Ethan Cashen and Aurora’s Fabio Aiello ripped a shot from 18-yards out on the counter with the Stars’ Max Gutbrod (Slinger, Wis.) just getting his hands up to knock the ball over the cross bar.

Roberts had another good scoring opportunity in the 23rd minute as his header sailed just over the cross bar.

The Stars managed to outshoot the Spartans 9-4 in the opening 45 minutes, putting two shots on frame while the Spartans forced Gutbrod to make three saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0 at the half.

In the second half, Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa) broke the tie just 48 seconds into the half, as he received a pass from Elizalde from 16 yards out and was able to beat Cashen on the ground inside the far post.  The score was Marvin’s third of the season and first game-winner of the year.

Aurora’s best opportunity to tie the score came in the 73rd minute as the Spartans’ Xavier Carrillo got in behind the Dominican defense ripping a shot wide right into the side netting from six yards out.  Carrillo, the Spartans’ second-leading scorer on the season, was limited to just one shot in the match.

With the win, Dominican extends its NCAA-record conference unbeaten streak to 97 matches dating back to October 2004.  During the stretch, the Stars are 92-0-5 during the streak and are a perfect 26-0-0 against conference opponents since October 9, 2010.

The Stars will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Milwaukee, Wis., to take on the MSOE Raiders at Time Warner Cable Stadium.  Kickoff is slated for 7:15 p.m.
