Box Score The 2012 Dominican University men's soccer season came to a close on Friday night, with the Stars falling to the Wheaton College Thunder, 1-0 in the NCAA Division III Round of 16.
Marshall Hollingsworth notched the game's lone goal, beating Dominican's
Max Gutbrod (Slinger, Wis.). Hollingsworth has scored in back-to-back games for the Thunder and now has nine goals on the season, including a team-high five game-winners.
The Stars' high-powered offense was shutout for the first time all season despite a number of good scoring opportunities. In just the second minute, Dominican looked to capitalize on its first restart opportunity but
Luiz Montoya's (Blue Island, Ill.) shot rattled off the cross bar.
In the final minute of the first half,
David Aranda (Wheeling, Ill.) volleyed a shot that sailed just over the cross bar from nine yards out.
Scoring chances continued to come for the Stars, including a number of opportunities as the Stars pressed forward throughout the final 20 minutes of the match.
In the 74th minute, Dominican's
Marco Alvarez (Aurora, Ill.) blasted a shot from the right flank with Wheaton's Ryan Seeger just able to get a finger on the shot to push it wide.
Throwing everything forward in the final minutes, the Stars continued to be dangerous in the offensive third. In the 88th minute,
Ryan Ybarra's (Des Plaines, Ill.) shot was ticketed for the back of the night but Wheaton's Kevin Skinker stepped in front to knocked down what would have been the equalizer.
The Stars' final opportunity came in the final ten seconds but
Andy Lynch's (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) shot sailed over the cross bar to dash the Stars' hopes at a return to the Elite Eight.
Both sides managed 12 shots in the tightly contested match, with the Thunder putting seven on frame compared to just three for the Stars. Dominican outcornered the Thunder 9-4, including 8-2 in the second half.
The Stars close out the season at 18-3-1 while the Thunder, 18-3-3, will meet the Loras College Duhawks in the sectional finals, with the winner punching their ticket to the Division III Final Four in San Antonio, Texas.
