Anthony Keener (Carol Stream, Ill.) scored 13 points in the second half, none bigger than a three as time expired, to propel the Dominican University men's basketball team to a 56-53 win over the St. Mary's University Cardinals in River Forest on Tuesday night.
Trailing 36-29 with under 13:30 remaining in the second half, the Stars went on a on a 9-0 run capped by a
Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) turnaround jumper to take a 38-36 lead.
The Cardinals regained the lead on a LaMonte Hall three-pointer less than a minute later, but the Stars pushed the ball up the floor and #R.J. Dilay# (Morton Grove, Ill.) knocked down three of his five points off the bench to put the Stars back ahead 41-39.
The teams traded baskets the rest of the way until Keener knocked down a three from in front of the Dominican bench after his defender fell down with under three seconds to play.
Keener finished the night with a game-high 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field, including going 2-for-4 from behind the three-point arc.
DeRoo and
Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) added 12 apiece in the winning effort as Dominican shot 21-for-46 from the field, going 5-for-12 from distance. Harris also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Cardinals were led by Hall and Evan Pederson who scored nine points apiece.
The win improves the Stars to 1-2 on the season. Dominican will travel to Beloit College on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. tipoff. The Stars the return home to open Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play with the Rockford College Regents next Tuesday.
