The Dominican University men’s soccer team earned the right to host an NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Regional Quad, posting a 16-2-1 overall record and winning the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) regular season and tournament championships to secure the Stars’ 11
th straight bid to the national tournament. The Stars will play host to DePauw University (13-1-5), Calvin College (16-3-1) and Webster University (12-5-2) for the single-elimination tournament on Friday and Saturday winner advancing into the Sweet 16 to be played the weekend of November 16-18.
The Stars have drawn Webster for the first round and will take on the Gorloks at 11:00 a.m. Friday morning followed by the DePauw Tigers and Calvin Knights at 1:30 p.m. all on Dominican’s West Campus Field. The winners from Friday’s matchups will then meet on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in River Forest.
The Stars and Gorloks have just one previous meeting, that coming in September 2005 with Dominican traveling down to St. Louis and returning with a 4-1 victory. The Stars, riding a five-match winning streak since falling on the road at Loras College on October 15, boast the nation’s second-best offense, scoring 3.89 goals per game, led by senior forward
Ryan Roberts’s (Elmhurst, Ill.) 12 goals.
As efficient as the Stars’ offense is, Dominican is just as tough in its defensive third of the field, ranking 15
th nationally with a 0.56 goals against average. The Stars’ have posted 11 shutouts on the season, led by senior goalkeeper
Max Gutbrod’s (Slinger, Wis.) eight shutouts. Gutbrod touts a miniscule 0.44 goals average, having surrendered just six goals in over 1,200 minutes in goal.
The Gorloks are led by senior defender Josh Sellmeyer, named the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Player of the Year. Sellmeyer and sophomore goalkeeper Brian Woodward anchored Webster’s defense that posted a 1.16 goals against average in leading the Gorloks to a SLIAC regular season and tournament championship.
The Gorloks’ offensive leader is sophomore midfielder Mike Wells who has a team-best eight goals for a total of 16 points. Wells was a first-team All-SLIAC selection along with Sellmeyer, Woodward, Clint Carder, Carlos Espinosa and Shea Vogt.
The gates to West Campus Field will open one-hour prior to kickoff each day with tickets on sale at the main gate. Tickets are $6 general admission, $3 for students with ID and senior citizens and $2 for children ages 2 through 12. Children under the age of 2 are free.
