Box Score The Dominican University men’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships with an explosive 3-1 win over the Webster University Gorloks on Friday afternoon in River Forest.
Falling behind 1-0 in the 30
th minute on Clint Carder’s seventh goal of the season, the Stars offensive could not get going until
Andy Lynch (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) made good on a penalty kick the Stars were awarded after junior
Robbie Baird (Columbia, Mo.) was taken down in the box.
Lynch’s goal seemed to wake the Stars’ offense as Dominican exploded for three goals in a 3:28 span started by Lynch’s eighth tally of the season in the 70
th minute. Two minutes later,
Ryan Roberts (Elmhurst, Ill.) notched the go-ahead goal as
Trent Miller (Rockford, Ill.) sent a cross from the left flank that Roberts was able to get on the end and beat Webster’s Brian Woodward.
A little over a minute later, Roberts returned the favor as he let Miller’s free kick roll between his legs to fake out Woodward and the Webster defense as the shot from Miller rolled into the back of the Gorlok goal.
The Stars dominated the stat sheet, ripping 24 shots compared to just six for the Gorloks and out-cornering Webster 17-0.
Dominican’s
Max Gutbrod (Slinger, Wis.) improved to 13-1-0 in goal for the Stars, making two saves in the winning effort.
The Stars will meet the DePauw University Tigers in Saturday’s regional championship match as the Tigers posted an impressive 3-0 shutout victory over the Calvin College Knights in match two at Dominican’s West Campus Field. Tony Halterman stopped eight shots for the Tigers in the winning effort as DePauw posted its 11
th shutout of the season.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in River Forest with the winner advancing into the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship Sweet 16.
